Lack of technical skills (and the time to develop them!), lack of funds, and lack of certainty of how to begin are common barriers for many librarians trying to create a web presence for their libraries and their community. In 2007, the Utah State Library teamed up with BCR in an attempt to find a sustainable solution to this problem for the state’s many small libraries. Join us to discuss our approach to this common dilemma, to take a peek at some of the websites that came out of the project, and to hear from some of the librarians involved.

Doing that is easy!

In a post or page:

  • Highlight the word or address you want to become the link
  • Click on the “Insert/edit Link” icon in the toolbar (looks like a chain link)
  • In the “Link URL” box, delete the http://, and instead type in the following: mailto:youraddress@yourlibrary.org
  • Type in a link title
  • and Insert the link! Wordpress generates the HTML code for you.

Doing this in a sidebar widget is a little different, because if you’re using a text widget, you have to write the HTML code yourself. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Go to your Presentation –> Widgets page
  • Click on the edit icon next to the text widget with your contact information in it. It will look something like this:
    Contact Info Text Widget without mailto: link
  • You need to wrap the email address in a mailto anchor tag, as shown below.Contact Info Text Widget with mailto: link

One thing to keep in mind, is that this may not work the way you hope it will when people use it from a public computer. For mailto links to work, the computer has to be configured with the patron’s preferred email tool and account info. It will work great, most likely, for patrons using it from a home computer, though!

Put in your complete email address and password in that box. EX: info@gunnisonlibrary.org, then your password again. You’re in!
